Our Percussion group is for students in 4th and 5th grade. The format for this year's percussion group will be very similar to the way Mr. Rauschenberg teaches his private percussion lessons. There are no planned performances.
Current Focus
We have been working on each exercise up through Study #11 (except for the Accents on the top of page 10.) Keep improving speeds on the previous exercises.
Rehearsals
We rehearse after school until 4:00 on Tuesdays through May. It is very important that members attend all rehearsals. Students will be learning how to perform as a member of a group, but this is impossible if the entire group isn't practicing together. If a student must miss a rehearsal, please email Mr. Rauschenberg prior to the rehearsal.
Dismissal
All students should be picked up at 4:00. Parents may line up along the curb in the bus lot. The only exception would be students going to ASEP. Excessive late pick-ups may lead to a student's dismissal from the group.
Fees
There are no fees to join our music groups. The anticipated expenses for Percussion students include costs for a PSE Music t-shirt, practice pad, drumsticks and a studies book. More details about these materials can be found below.
Discipline
Our performing groups operate on a strike system. Earning three strikes will result in the student's removal from the group. Students may be given a strike for inappropriate behavior or unexcused absences from rehearsals.

Materials Needed
Sticks – I suggest Vic Firth brand "SD1 General" drum sticks. (approximately $8-$10) These are a very common style, so they should be easily found.
Practice Pad – Practice pads vary in shape, size, style, and many other variables. The manufacturers I suggest include Real Feel, Ahead, or Vic Firth. (Please do not get a Remo practice pad.) You can find single-sided and double-sided pads, but single-sided is sufficient. (approximately $18-$40)
Book – "Elementary Snare Drum Studies" by Mitchell Peters (approximately $18-$20)
Metronome – These can be purchased, but there are many online metronomes available for free if a student practices near a computer.
Where can I get these items? Drum sticks are available at many area music stores. The best selection of pads I've seen are at either Music & Arts in the Arboretum or Sam Ash Music (Tyvola near 77.) The book may have to be ordered either through a local music store or you can find it online. One well-respected online source specializing in percussion is SteveWeissMusic.com. If you need any further assistance, contact Mr. Rauschenberg.
